Biography 
Mark Van Bommel was born in the small town of Maasbracht, close to the Dutch-Belgian border and started his football career at Fortuna in nearby Sittard. He showed his strengths at an early age and was handed his debut in the Dutch Eredivisie at just 16 years of age.
The central midfielder spent seven seasons at Fortuna Sittard before he was transferred to play for one of Holland's biggest clubs: PSV Eindhoven. It was at his new club that the powerful Van Bommel began to make his mark among the football elite, in both the Netherlands and across Europe. He became a lynchpin in the PSV side thanks to his incredible workrate and his unquestionable ability.
The honours began to role in and Van Bommel accrued four league titles, a Dutch Cup and three Dutch Super Cups in just six seasons at PSV. After impressing at club level, Van Bommel was handed his Holland debut on Ocotber 7, 2000 when he played in the Oranje's 4-0 victory over Cyprus.
Mark Van Bommel moved from PSV Einhoven to FC Barcelona on a Bosman free transfer in the summer of 2005.
