FC Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard is confronted with a severe defence problem due to the muscular injuries of Edmilson and Rafael Marquez. Both players play similar positions, central defender and the defensive holding role, but both are out due to injury at the same time. With Barca captain Carles Puyol not available for selection in the first leg of the Champions League clash against Benfica due to yellow card suspension the problems are by far bigger than in La Liga. These are the different defence options for a possible line-up in the UEFA Champions League first leg against Benfica:


Defence Option 1:
Belletti, Oleguer, Sylvinho, Gio and as central, defensive midfielder: Thiago Motta


Defence Option 2:

Belletti, Oleguer, Rodri, Gio and as central, defensive midfielder: Thiago Motta


Defence Option 3:
Belletti, Oleguer, Motta, Ylvinho (or Gio) and as central, defensive midfielder: Iniesta (or Van Bommel, Gabri, Deco, Gio)
