fcbarcelonablog has the pleasure to publish this joint statement made by FC Barcelona and UNICEF today:

"UNICEF, the United Nations agency whose goal it is to guarantee children's rights, and Futbol Club Barcelona, through their Fundació, have reached an agreement to work together for the benefit of orphaned children in vulnerable situations, in particular those that are affected by the HIV/AIDS virus.

"With this new global alliance with UNICEF, FC Barcelona, through their Fundaciò, is committed to defending these objectives for the next five years.

"The signatures and the official presentation of the agreement will take place on August 11 at the United Nations headquarters in New York, within the framework of the tour of Mexico and the United States that the first team football squad are undertaking.

"The theme of this accord is Barça, more than a club, a new global hope for vulnerable children.

"UNICEF was founded in 1946 by General Assembly of the United Nations to reply to childrens' urgent needs in Europe which, after World War Two, were in a very precarious situation.

"The first UNICEF programmes allowed emergency help to reach millions of children in the Middle East, China and Europe. Since then, the protection of all children, without distiction of race, beliefs, nationality or religion has become a universal mission that is now almost 60 years old."

Funny that a club that treats 13-year old kids from all over the world like objects should work with unicef...

You don't see many other clubs giving a damn about anything but cash. FCB turned down a record breaking lucrative deal from BetAndWin to be able to support this (http://www.fcbarcelonablog.com/fcbarcelonablog/fcbarcelonablog.php/2006/07/12/title_411).

I think your comments don't do FCB justice. I for one think it is quite unusual to find a club who uses their positive image to raise awareness children, rather than to raise cash.

I guess you're an Arsenal fan. At least, our club don't get sponsered by the Hamas and Hizbollah when it comes to finace the new football stadium. Fly Emirate, ha ha! I guess you'll change the club name to Emirates FC now?

Jimmy -- It's spelled Hezbollah and do you even know where the UAE is? Or anything about its geopolitical role? Thought not. Anyway, at least no one at Arsenal is connected to a Francoist -- redheaded cunt. Most embarrassing relative: Joan Laporta's brother-in-law Alejandro Echevarría who, despite his vociferous protests to the contrary, turned out to be a member of the Fundación Nacional Francisco Franco. Which is a bit embarrassing for a club that is supposedly defined by its opposition to the dictator. Almost as embarrassing, in fact, as Laporta's ludicrous claim that: "Echevarría can't possibly be a Francoist because he was only 10 when Franco died". And this guy's a lawyer, for Christ's sake.
