After the 3 M´s (Majó, Medina and Minguella) not likely to challenge current president Joan Laporta and one of his bitter rivals, Sandro Rosell denied he would step up as a candidate for election, there is the possibility that Laporta could be re-installed as president of FC Barcelona by the end of August without holding elections if no other rival decides to stand.

Laporta and his board team will resign this week and pave the way for new elections after a judge ruled that his 4 year period as president is over.

The decision to step down and call elections on 10th of September instead of fighting and appealing the court decision is a fine tactical move from Laporta, himself a lawyer and his team.

After turning the club around in 3 years, winning the Champions league and Spanish championship back-to-back, bringing in superstars such as idol Ronaldinho, it is hard to be believe that serious contenders will stand for elections. Campaigning during the summer month of August and winning on 10th of September would be like a miracle, a reason why the only realistic candidate with an outsider chance, Sandro Rosell, will not challenge the current president Laporta. The former head of Nike South American, was Laporta's right-hand man in the last presidential election campaign in 2003. Rosell and Laporta fell out last year and Rosell left the Laporta´s board team on bad terms. Since, he has published a book and often publicly critizing Laporta´s ruling of the club.

Follow up:

Rosell believes that 6 weeks are not enough to become president of Barca:

Despite the amount of support that I have received related to my possible candidature, I want to state that I will not be presenting myself or be part of anyone else's campaign. I have thought about this for a long time, but I really do not want to debilitate that stability at the club, which is down to the success of the team.

So far, the court ruling has only be to the benefit of Joan Laporta, who could be re-installed as president without any opposing candidate by end of August. All possible candidates would have preferred elections in 2007, instead of Sep,10 this year. Laporta, who probably would have seen tough opposition next year, may be ruling the club for another period of 4 years without even being challenged.

Everything is going well for Laporta and it is already rumoured that the court case was initiated by the current board team and to use the ruling of the judge as a tactical move to keep any contenders away to lead the club for another 4 years instead of 1.

However, as much as the court decision might be legally correct, it has nothing to do with common sense. The people who initiated the legal theater shot themselves in the foot and have not acted in the best interest of the club and its members. The mandate to rule the club is given for 4 years. So, 8 days in charge does not represent 1 whole year. So, why all this fuss of the hypocrites?
Instead of democratic, fair elections with hopeful candidates and a proper campaign next spring, the assembly will probably install the old president for another 4 year period without any opposition.
