The chances that Joan Laporta will be reinstated as president of FC Barcelona before the end of August without an election being held are rising every day.
Yesterday, Laporta´s strongest rival, Jordi Majo, one of the so called "3M" (Majo, Minguella, Medina) candidates has announced that he would not be standing for elections and strongly critised the way how the court ruling had been handled by the caretaker commission.
Jordi Majo critized the date of the elections on September, 3 due to the fact that August is the traditional holiday month in Catalonia and that the elections are not held on a match day as it has been tradition in the past:
"I will not be participating in the election because I do not want to be part of a process that makes a mockery of democracy. The date of the election limits the active participation of the voters. They have also ignored a statute recommendation that voting takes place on the day of a game. The electoral commission has confused the judicial order of calling elections because they had three months to set a date to encourage members to take part. Despite having the signatures, I will not meet the rest of the criteria because there is an absence of democratic sense in all this."
Josep Maria Minguella has already hinted that he will withdraw from the race for presidency and a final decision is expected after meetings with his team on Monday evening. Jordi Medina, without the alliance of Majo and Minguella will not provide much opposition to Joan Laporta and therefore is expected not to stand for election on his own.
If Laporta is left unchallenged and other contenders appear at the deadline set to register the candidacy, Joan Laporta would be reinstated as president before the end of August without an election even being held.
