R.C.D. Espanyol seems to have given up to win the Spanish Super Cup on the pitch after FC Barcelona won the first leg 1-0 at the Perico´s home stadium at Montjuic. With little chance to win the trophy at Camp Nou, Espanol officials reported to the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) because Carles Puyol and Xavi were ineligible to play for FC Barcelona and instead the Super Cup should be handed over to Espanyol as the rightful winner.
The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) rejected this ridiculous complaint, stating that they will not punish either the players or FC Barcelona.
Competition Committee president, Alfredo Florez, confirmed:
We have rejected the request by Espanyol to award them the match that they lost to Barcelona," the Competition Committee president, Alfredo Florez, confirmed. In this case the RFEF informed us and certified that the players were excused from playing and therefore there can be no application of sanctions.
Espanol club's director, Pedro Tomás, believes that under FIFA regulations Xavi and Puyol were permitted from being fielded in last Thursdays match and therefore Espanyol have promised to take the case further to a higher level.
A very low level move from Espanyol wanting to win a trophy by a hopeless complaint instead on the pitch. The Barca team surely will go out on Sunday to prove who is the rightful owner of the Super Cup Trophy. The Sunday match looked like a less intereseting event, but now it has the additional spice to heat up the derby in the second leg again. The re-match takes place at Camp Nou on Sunday, August 20, at 22:00 (GMT +2).
