It has taken Argentine international Javier Saviola exactly 895 days (or 2 1/2 years) to appear into FC Barcelona´s first team starting line-up in the Spanish Championship.
Yesterday night, in the La Liga match against Deportivo, Saviola got finally his chance to start the match, after top striker Samuel Eto’o and former Chelsea forward Eidur Gudjohnsen had been ruled out due to injury.
The last time Saviola wore a Barca shirt from the start was on 23rd of May 2004 against Real Zaragoza at La Romareda in the last match of the 2003-04 season.
Saviola looked good in the attacking line and played a vital role in the penalty decision that lead to Barca´s only goal on the evening. Saviola was fould by Deportivo´s Juanma and the ref had no choice other than to point to the penalty spot.
The "Conejo" (rabbit) caused a few problems for the Deportivo defence. His pace and passing skills added value to his other striking partners, Leo Messi on the right and Ronaldinho on the left. Saviola looked sharp and his pace and mobility supported the flowing moves at attack.
Saviola was substituted by Ludovic Giuly in the 63rd minute after a promissing performance.
There is a lot of controversy and many different opinions about the "Conejo" and despite having no long term future at the Club, there is one question to be answered:
Should Saviola start for Samuel Eto’o as long as the first and top striker Eto’o is injured?
