Barcelona's Zambrotta may very well be bracing up for a different battle ahead of next season's Champion's League





One of the best defenders in Europe and in world football, Barcelona's Zambrotta may have an extra goal to pursue next season other than just winning titles with FC Barcelona.


The Italian world cup winner has never scored in any European cup competition since his career and this challenge will very well be on his mind when the next season commences.


Although goal scoring is not a virtue often associated with defenders, Zambrotta's records seem haunted by the Euro goal draught, considering that he has scored in other competitions and leagues he has played in and even for his country Italy.


Blessed with exceptional skills many strikers will envy, Zambrotta, who has been hailed as a modern day defender possessing strength, skill, speed high intelligence and precision, may not often looked upon to deliver when it matters most, like fellow Italian teammates Filippo Inzaghi or Del Pierro or fellow Barcelona teammates Samuel Eto'o or Ronaldinho, Zambrotta does score important goals sometimes and often in spectacular fashion. One of the most memorable of such goals was his great goal against Ukraine in last year's World Cup, Gemrany 2006. The goal helped propel Italy to the Semi-Finals with a 3-0 victory and voted as one of the best goals in the World Cup.


He has scored a total of 23 goals in his career that has spanned 13 years now, since his debut appearance for his Hometown club, Como in 1994.


He has already scored 2 goals this season with Barcelona and this may be a sign that his goal tally may increase as from next season, considering that in the last four seasons with Juventus, he scored just once.


Putting a defender on the scoring spotlight is not common, but with one with Zambrotta's profile, a close observation of his European Cup Competition's goal performance will definitely be an interesting to watch as it will be surrounded with the suspense and excitement associated with finding the source of a myth and breaking a jinx in the full glare of supportive soccer fans.
