Other than just Rangers' negative football, Rijkaard has other worries.

The Dutchman expressed sadness not only at the game Rangers played, but at the fact the Barca didn't score as was clearly deserved. Rijkaard however saw an improved Barcelona squad from the performance against Villarreal, and also had some nice words for Eidur Gudjohnsen:

Coach Frank Rijkaard Regrets Rangers Match.

All these Barca players moaning, are just annoyed that all their 'superstars' threw everything at Glasgow Rangers and got no-where and in the end......ran completely out of ideas. Back to the drawing board

Barca are obviously a wonderful footballing team but you just get the impression that some of their super-duperstars would not be happy unless the team they are playing against puts up a bit of fight for 10mins and then rolls over and lets them win 6-0......No doubt they will win the return match, but some of their players, Messi in particular, need to look at their own performances rather then complaining about the opposition. Its not like he was kicked off the park or anything. Rangers needed a point and they got it, Barca had perhaps 2 'clear cut' chances in the entire game - the headers from Gudjohnsen and Henry....neither was on target...'end of'.

Aye, well said mate. I agree. Barca will win in Spain (overjoyed if they don't!) But as Greavsie once said "its a funny old game" If Gers dig in again for 20-25 minutes the home crowd will get restless. The absence of Thompson is not a sore one as hopefuly Hemdani will be back and also Jean-Claude Darcheville. As the Scots proved against the French, anything is possible. On saying all that Barca will have a few of their guys back so........who knows.

Firstly the description of the story at the top doesn't match Rijkaard's comments in the slightest. He wasn't complaining about Rangers at all and didn't labour any point that Barcelona derserved to score. He's got too much integrity for that.

Seems to me that the owner of this blog is the one that is whinging.

But if Barca fans can complain about Rangers defending then can't Rangers fans complain about the Barca defence?

After all, Barca players were closing down Rangers players rapidly as soon as they got the ball and didn't allow Rangers to play the open, expansive, attacking game that they would like.

Not only that Barca skillfully passed the ball sideways and backwards a lot in their own half and midfield, denying Rangers players much of the possession, without creating more than a few chances for themselves.

Wouldn't it have been a more entertaining game if Barca had stood off the attacking Rangers players, giving them loads of space and allowing them a load of attacks on goal?

Basically the way Barca played meant there were very few chances for either side.

So the question is, are Barcelona playing anti-football?

Or is it some of their players and fans get strangely upset when a team doesn't just lie down for them and actually make it difficult for them?

You can't complain about a lack of goals when your own team defends very aggressively and they play keep ball for two thirds of the game, over 30 yards from the opponents goal.

I'd like to expand on my previous post and put it to you that Rangers were the team who played tactics more conducive to attacking football.

Let’s compare an contrast the both teams tactics on attack and defence.

Rangers sat well off the Barcelona attacking players in midfield, giving them time and room to control and play the ball easily. In contrast Barca defenders closed down Rangers players quickly and allowed them no time or space to get the ball under control and either run with it or pass it well.

Who allowed more attractive, flowing, passing and attacking football. I would conclude that Rangers did.

In attack Rangers moved the ball forward quickly at every opportunity going straight for goal as much as possible. In contrast Barca spent most of the time passing slightly forwards, sideways and backwards, and although they had twice as much possession they had less than half the scoring chances.

I would conclude there that Rangers played a much more attacking game while Barca were cagey and defensive of the ball.

The ultimate conclusion must be that Rangers play far more positive football while Barcelona play much more negative football. QED.
