FC Barcelona players in crucial roles for their respective countries.
A penalty resulting from a foul on Giovani dos Santos was well converted by Cacho to give Mexico a 2-2 draw with Nigeria. The FC Barcelona starlet featured for all of the 90 minutes of the match played in Mexico, with Dos Santos being the antidote to the rampaging Nigerians. The Barca star proved a worthy answer on the other end to attacking incursions made by the West Africans, who are the number one rated country by FIFA in all of the Africa. Nigeria went ahead with a goal from Newcastle striker, Obafemi Martins. The Magpie, Martins made it two against the hosts, and with Mexico trailing 2-0, Giovani stepped up his game to constantly upset the Nigerian defence. Mexico drew one goal back through Cacho and got level after the skillful Dos Santos was fouled by a mesmerized Nigerian defence for a penalty, which Cacho again, converted to make it 2-2.
Ronaldinho also staved off challenges from host country Colombia to give Brazil an away point from their 2010 FIFA world cup qualifying match opener in Bogota. The FC Barcelona machine played all through the match, creating beautiful opportunities for the Samba Boys. Ronaldinho will again anchor events in Brazil's second world cup match against Ecuador in the Maracana, while Giovani will brace up for Mexico as they face Guatamela in their second friendly this week.
FC Barcelona meastro achieves international landmark.
When Ronaldinho files out against Colombia in Bogota for the 2010 World Cup qualifiers for Brazil, the FC Barcelona star would have completed honouring his 100th call up for his country. Ronaldinho was first called up for national service back at the 1999 Copa América when he was18 year-old. Since then Ronaldinho Gaúcho has played 83 games in the Canarinha shirt, scoring 33 goals in the process and winning several pieces of silverware for Brazil, the most memorable being the Fifth World Cup victory in 2002 after The Samba Boys defeated Germany 2-0 in the final played in Japan. The FC Barcelona star says of his landmark achievement of 100 call-ups:
Managing to stay in the seleção during so long is a cause for happiness. There’s no better way to celebrate than by winning against Colombia and then doing the same in Maracanã.
After Colombia, Brazil will also play Ecuador in its next World Cup qualifying match in the Maracana Stadium, Rio de Janeiro.
Zambrotta remains adamant about any moves to swoop on team mate Ronaldinho.
Injured Gianluca Zambrotta has spoken from his virtual sick-bed to defend his beloved teammate, Ronaldinho. The Italian defender spoke with assurance on the immense talents of Ronaldinho, saying that such talents will eventually come to its climax anytime soon. Zam, who has been openly shooing clubs from even mentioning Ronnie’s name, reminded all clubs like Chelsea FC that Ronaldinho was going nowhere outside Camp Nou:
Ronaldinho is a great talent, who has had difficult moments, but he is over them now. Players with such skills don’t stay low for long. He’s also not leaving Barcelona. Ronaldinho is happy at Barca and will stay on.
Zambrotta, also took a question on the fortunes of his former club, Juventus:
They are good enough to win the serie A. It is good to see them near the top and that they are close to the leaders. It is a surprise because nobody thought that they would be that high.
Juventus are placed second in Italian Serie A behind defending champions Inter Milan.
