It's all joy for Barca's record breaking French goal machine.
FC Barcelona's French international striker, Thierry Henry spoke after setting a new international record in French football as the highest all-time scorer to have ever played for France since history. The spectacular feat was long-awaited, but Henry, in his usual way, expressed joy to his teammates as well, without who he knows he would never have achieved the landmark. Speaking on his feelings, Henry said:
I'm still excited. As I scored, I thought about my father, who is unwell at the moment. I thought of everyone else, of course, but especially my father. Tonight, we still had something to do, which was to beat Lithuania. 15 minutes from the end, it was still 0-0, so it didn't even matter who scored. But in the hallway afterwards, I hugged Thuram in joy. I didn't want victory to be a personal thing. My partners helped me score.
Thierry cautions against over-excitement, saying that one more hurdle between France and the Euro 2008 ticket was still left:
We cannot put this record before qualifying. Now, we'll watch Italy play in Scotland. Should the Italians beat Scotland, then we'll qualify without doing anything. Therefore we must support the Italians, which will be strange!
FC Barcelona team mate of Henry at the French national team also speaks on the history-making game against Lithuania:
We had so many opportunities but just couldn't score. After that first goal, we were able to relax a bit, but we had to stay focused. Conceding would have been catastrophic.
Thierry Henry's record breaking goal against Lithuania and goal number 43.
Watch Thierry Henry score his two goals against Lithuania - goals that set him apart from the rest by writing his name in the record books of international football:
FC Barcelona's goal god, Thierry Henry has smahsed Michel Platini's goals record.
As expected, Thierry Henry scored in the match against Lithuania to exceed the 41 goals scored by French legend, Michel Platini. Henry made it 42 goals with his 80th minute strike and went ahead to make it 43 goals in his international career a minute later, sealing victory for the French national team.
France started the match very hot. With just 55 seconds on the clock, Franck Ribery was the first to strike the woodwork with a 25-yard effort that was tipped onto the bar by Karcemarskas.Karim Benzema had a shot deflected just wide before Florent Malouda picked up the ball just inside the area and crashed a wonderful effort against the bar.
In the 18th minute, the woodwork was hit for the third time in the game - but this time it was from a Lithuanian player. Audrius Ksanavicius somehow turned inside Eric Abidal and Jeremy Toulalan, and sent a superb left-footed curler against the post. That was the eastern Europeans' only chance of the half, and in the 20 minutes before the break, William Gallas, Malouda, Henry and Benzema all squandered glorious opportunities for the hosts.
Henry fired over in the first minute of second half, and found the midriff of Karcemarskas with an effort minutes later. Ribery, probably France's best player here, drove a 20-yard shot just wide on the hour mark while Henry was denied by the inspired Karcemarskas soon after. The pressure was relentless and substitute Hatem Ben Arfa was next to miss the target, poking a volley wide.
It looked like Les Bleus were going to be denied but with 12 minutes left, Henry got the goal he deserved.
Ben Arfa's cross from the left was deflected into the path of the Barcelona striker, who found the net from eight yards. And Henry made the game safe a minute later when he ran onto Jeremy Toulalan's through-ball and calmly sidefooted his finish past Karcemarskas.
